Practice Makes Perfect

In college, I used to be a daily journal writer. I have volumes of journals. When I got married, the habit went by the wayside. My husband didn’t journal every night before bed like I was used to doing, so it kind of fell apart. I love that I have those old journals to go back and read. Those were some formidable and important decision-making years of my life! It’s funny looking back at the entries. I can literally tell what mood I was in by the handwriting- even before I’ve read the material!

These days, most journaling or blogging is done on a computer. There’s something a little impersonal about that. It is faster, though! I still don’t blog as frequently as I used to. I have kept up with important family events (birth of children, moves, job changes, etc), but the daily messes are missing. Honestly, the only reason I use social media is as a form of journaling or blogging. I print my Instagram content into books and keep hard copies for safekeeping.

Blogging daily over the last few weeks has reminded me of many memories I stored in my old memory bank. Writing about personal memories brings out a certain “voice” in me. I’m more reflective and introspective in my writing. Writing about things I don’t feel personally connected to is more difficult. I find myself having to edit and check for possible grammar errors more often than a personal piece of writing. Writing both personal and professional pieces has been good for me. I could use the practice in both areas!
